 The compiler variants come from the mpi portgroup (which loads the
 compilers portgroup) and mpi.setup (which calls compilers.setup). The
 compilers portgroup however doesn't change configure.compiler (which would
 avoid the problem at hand), but directly modifies configure.{cc,cxx,...}
 and leaves configure.compiler at the default.

 This causes MacPorts to attempt to find a compiler itself, which causes
 this problem, because the fallback list contains clang-3.3.
