 You could just set it to *any* value to avoid the auto-config. Or, you
 could keep a list options currently supported in base and use those if
 available. Or, you could somehow dynamically determine the list of
 compilers supported by base (which would be future-proof, wouldn't get out
 of date and would work nicely with trunk).
