 One further idea discussed on the IRC channel:

 py27-cairo, if it had explicit quartz and x11 variants would, perhaps
 notice a variants.conf change and rebuild.
 It DOES have different behaviors when built in the two different contexts,
 so separate variants really do seem necessary here.
 Is there something I can do to help make this happen?
