 Final comment.  I now realise what led to this
 (https://github.com/xianyi/OpenBLAS/issues/349), and my success building
 with gcc was because my environment was being polluted when building it
 myself.  Apologies for all the noise--things work fine for me, given this
 knowledge.  Thanks for your help.
