 I think we can close this now. I uninstalled everything (including Python
 3.4), used macports to install Python 3.4, and then installed py34-healpy,
 which has multiple dependies, including py34-setuptools and py34-cycler,
 etc.

 Somehow that worked. No, I don't understand either. It appears some
 py34-*** port somewhere is not playing well with others.
