 OK. A few minor modifications from my side (no need to upload a new
 patch):
   * no need to whitelist `macports-clang-3.4`
   * the variant `macports-clang-3.4` has to be reintroduced to "properly"
 work on older systems (to keep dependency on 3.4)
 I hope that's ok with you?

 I would commit this together with #50007 if it works (the compiler is
 still busy) and if you agree with it.
