 As noted in comment:12, +universal variant fails with an error with
 iconv.[[BR]]
 On OS X 10.11, at least, CMakeError.log records the error: {{{The C
 compiler identification could not be found in ...}}}, which is similar to
 #48331.[[BR]]
 Following the [https://cmake.org/pipermail/cmake-
 developers/2015-September/thread.html#26586 upstream discussion], r143737
 fixed the universal problem for me.

 By any chance, did r143737 fix the non-universal iconv problem as well?
