 Perhaps you installed the development version (2.3.99) of MacPorts base
 from svn trunk and then reverted to 2.3.4?  At any rate, your registry
 database is malformed/corrupted.  I suggest uninstalling your current
 MacPorts installation (saving a list of currently installed ports if
 possible) and then re-installing MacPorts 2.3.4 (as if you were migrating
 to a new OS version) using the [wiki:Migration Migration instructions].
 Once reinstalled you can reinstall your ports from the saved list and
 should be up and running again.
