 It seems that out-of-source builds require specifying an SDK explicitly;
 this adds the logic to configure for the host's default SDK if the
 preferred SDK isn't available (preferred = the SDK matching the OS
 version).

 Thanks to Marko for his patience in helping to figure this out remotely.
