 I strongly suggest to use the [https://github.com/libkml/libkml
 libkml/libkml] fork on GitHub, it tries to continue the libkml development
 with community input.

 I've switched the libkml Debian package over those sources, and I
 encourage you to do the same for MacPorts. A new 1.3.0 (pre-)release is
 expected to be made from that repository soon.
