 There are very few ports left which still depend on this port:

  * `grass` (nomaintainer, see also #44056)
  * `relax3d` (openmaintainer, #41508)
  * `spatialite-tools` (nomaintainer)

 There are no obvious incompatibilities with `proj`, so probably this is
 just due to lack of maintenance.
