 I attempted to install tesseract.It failed while attempting to install
 python27. These are the subsequent steps I took after that. I have
 attached a log of my actions.

 shell$ sudo port install tesseract
 shell$ sudo port install Python27
 shell$ sudo port uninstall Python27
 shell$ sudo port install Python27
 shell$ sudo port selfupdate
 shell$ sudo port upgrade outdated
 shell$ sudo port install Python27
 shell$
