New description:

 I installed the pinentry-mac port and then tried:

 /Applications/MacPorts/pinentry-mac.app/Contents/MacOS/pinentry-mac

 but it shows the prompt in the console instead of as a GUI. I am using the
 pinentry-mac 0.8.1_1 port. Any ideas on why this might be happening and
 how to debug further?

 Doing:

 Applications/MacPorts/pinentry-mac.app/Contents/MacOS/pinentry-mac --debug

 gives no further information.
