 I was only thinking about Snow Leopard users while writing that, so I
 forgot to write out the conditional. The fact that this only affects them
 certainly mitigates the issue, but a solution that eliminates the manual
 intervention would be much better.

 What exactly does the build do with the output of xcrun? Does it use xcrun
 to call the compiler, or does it store the path somewhere, or what? Could
 you cut xcrun out of the build system?
