 worked fine: I can now use xxdiff.  As for qt4-mac,  I do not have it
 installed:

   qt3 @3.3.8_14 (active)
 }}}

 From your answer it sounds like you were expecting xxdiff to use qt4
 instead?  I notice another recent tracker item
 (https://trac.macports.org/ticket/44526) that modifies the port file to
 use qt4, but that doesn't seem to be the default right now.
