 It's probably both.

 The reason for this breakage is likely that newer perl versions are
 stricter than older ones and thus do not let you get away with defining
 global symbols "as-is" anymore.

 It's pretty moot, though, because the port is outdated anyway. We should
 try to update it to the most recent version 3.3.1 first.
