 Thanks, I tried this yesterday (really, I did!) to no avail.  In the
 meantime, I also had other reasons to reboot the computer and then "sudo
 port clean"-ed and then tried again.  Seems to be working now.
 I should no by now that if something stops working, always begin by
 rebooting the computer.  Just seems like such a crude approach...
