 On your Leopard/ppc box, you should have +ld64_127 as the default variant.

 You can explore whichever direction you think will work.  I'd probably try
 to use gcc-5 to build clang-3.7 as a starting point.  One of your biggest
 roadblocks will be http://www.llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=22270
