 I'm glad you got it working.

 MacPorts base 2.3.4 was recently released, but that's unrelated. Port
 updates are made available immediately, separately from the MacPorts base
 release schedule.

 What actually fixed it was r140820. I had only committed it to the
 repository an hour or so before you posted your bug report, which explains
 why you wouldn't have received it the previous time that you selfupdated.
