 Actually I think that at some point I did use

    $ sudo port uninstall installed
 }}}

 Actually I must have because at one point I uninstalled macports per the
 instructions here:
 https://guide.macports.org/chunked/installing.macports.uninstalling.html
 and reinstalled it again, then modified the new macports.conf file for
 libc++ etc
