 Ryan,

 As I wrote in comment:5, I am updating three MacBooks (new Pro, three-
 year-old Pro, and two-year-old Air). With all those three, the home
 directory was set to "/Users/macports". I installed the MacPorts base
 using the installer "MacPorts-2.3.4-10.11-ElCapitan.pkg". Is not it
 because of a possible bug in the installer? After that, I ran selfupdate
 many times.

 Anyway, the above works for me to make the building and installation of
 gimp-app successful.

 However, this time, the selfupdate has started to fail:
