 It is possible there was or still is a bug in the MacPorts installer
 relating to creating and setting up the macports user. I will try to
 investigate later.

 Assertion failures are programmer diagnostics that should never be seen by
 users so the Apple bug report should stay open until they fix it.

 Sync and selfupdate failures are a separate unrelated matter. See #49233
 and #49224.
