 In the last four days, I've been seeing the same pattern from here
 (Germany): no packet loss during the day, but it starts to climb around
 17-18:00 CET, peaking at 4-6%, and then decreasing again (this is via
 Level3; via XO I saw 0% packet loss the entire time, except on Thursday
 evening, when it was 3% for some time). I'm not sure what the MacPorts
 project can do about this, it's probably normal, depending on the provider
 and time of day. I had always thought that companies like Google use CDNs
 spread all over the world to fight HTTP latency, not data transfer for
 larger downloads.

 MacPorts already has a number of mirrors, and they work pretty well - I
 think redirecting users to a geographically close mirror, be it
 automatically or through manual configuration, is the right solution. The
 only problem is the initial installation: it currently takes a long time
 if you happen to install at the wrong moment, since the main server in
 always used. Fortunately, clean installs aren't something you need to do
 that often (probably once a year, because of a new OS X version).
