 I completed the proposed workaround as follows:

 1) update macports.conf by uncommented the host_blacklist and added
 github.com

 2) I ran the sudo port clean and install

 3)  The build was successful !

 4) I commented back the host_backlist and saved this version of the
 macports.conf

 5)  I re-ran port self update and  upgrade outdated

 It looks like it picked up all of the other updates ...apache, mysql and
 others so that I think I should have a full update !


 I use this mac mini as a server and a home theatre setup with mythtv and
 kodi so this is a big deal for me !
