 ABI changes happen with most new versions of boost. It's not really our
 responsibility to develop a versioning mechanism; it's up to the
 developers of boost to do that, and they do not appear to have any
 interest in doing so.

 We do not want to link with static libraries,  unless a particular build
 system makes it impossible to do otherwise.

 Using static libraries would not solve the problem, it would just hide the
 problem until later. We don't want to do that either.
