 OK, I'll waint on the gnutar update.

 The dependencies on bzip2 and zlib are ok.  They get recognized and used
 without regard for the old configure options.  So I guess they are no
 longer optional.

 BTW, I note that MacPorts has a port of libmd so you could add that as a
 dependency, if you use `--with-libmd` to enable it. Up to you, not sure if
 it would be useful or not but configures and builds without problems.
