 I'm also strongly in favour of keeping some generated files like
 `configure` in the repository as long as we can keep them up to date.
 (Obviously not `Makefile`, but I guess you had `Makefile.in` in mind.)

 The chicken-and-egg argument makes my preference even stronger. Creating &
 checking out tags (releases) is also more straightforward if those files
 are included.
