New description:

 The summary says it all ;-)

 When trying to use a wxt terminal in gnuplot script, running it with
 gnuplot opens a window, just long enough to show it did plot the graph,
 but then, about as quickly it opened, the window closes and disappears.

 {{{
   set terminal wxt persist
 }}}

 doesn't work, neither using persist on the command line

 FYI: aqua and x11 terminals do work as to be expected with persist
