 The newer VLC port I'm maintaining more or less actively is here:
 https://trac.macports.org/ticket/49051

 It looks that FFMpeg's build system provides all the hooks required to
 maintain parallel concurrent installations, up to and including the
 addition of a suffix to libraries and binaries. I'll try to find some time
 to exploit this and create a proof of concept implementation that I'll
 also be able to use to check VLC against FFMpeg 3 .
