 For octave versions 4.0.0 and above the octave port group installs
 packages using the octave command, which launches the octave GUI. Although
 functional, this can be distracting as the computer jumps focus away from
 the terminal session (in my case switching between virtual desktops).

 Use the octave-cli command instead.
