 FWIW, I tried:

   sudo port uninstall --follow-dependents gcc48

 which did finish successfully, but that did not seem to remove various
 stuff that had "+gcc48" variants, so "gcc48" kept being updated, and
 failing.
 I uninstalled the "+gcc48" variant-requiring ports manually (with the
 similar uninstall invocation), and then the system gave up trying to
 reinstall "gcc48".
