 2) sorry

 3(a) Will do.  (b) the variant description say "does not work with
 libc++".  The commit adding that comment was in 2014 with the 4.8.6
 update.  Says "fixed in the Qt5 series, but is not simple to backport".  I
 guess I should just try it but I'm away for a few days.
