 I am sorry to butt in, but this sound to me like the old 'as' story.
 GCC 4 use Apple-supplied /usr/bin/as (or /opt/local/bin/as for that
 matter):

 Apple Inc version cctools-877.8, GNU assembler version 1.38
 }}}
 Which is so ancient it does not know about SSE 4 or AVX.

 Clang has its own modern assembly, and can (maybe?) be used as a backend
 for GCC
