 Without the extra variants you used a pre-compiled binary archive from
 [http://packages.macports.org/MacVim/ packages.macports.org]. These are
 only available for the default variants. Forcing a build from source with
 `sudo port -s install MacVim` will also fail on your system due to missing
 Xcode.
