 FWIW, the code compiles if the omp parallel clause "`if (parallel)`" is
 removed. This along with the error message "`error: expected expression`"
 suggests that clang is incorrectly interpreting the omp pragma "`if`"
 clause as the opening of a C++ "`if`" conditional.
