 I have the same error after a selfupdate one hour ago (log in main.6.log
 above).

 According to
 {{{/opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/tarballs/ports/math/octave/Portfile}}}
 the -p switches are not present on the version that I tested.
