Comment (by uri@…):

 I confess that I don't quite know what I'm doing here. But the above does
 not seem to work, or is missing some important steps:

 {{{
 $ pushd $(port dir swig)
 /opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/tarballs/ports/devel/swig
 ~
 $ sudo patch -p0 < ~/Downloads/swig_ruby_XY.diff
 Password:
 patching file Portfile
 $ sudo port selfupdate
 ---> Updating MacPorts base sources using rsync
 MacPorts base version 2.3.4 installed,
 MacPorts base version 2.3.4 downloaded.
 --->  Updating the ports tree
 ---> MacPorts base is already the latest version

 The ports tree has been updated. To upgrade your installed ports, you
 should run
   port upgrade outdated
 shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access
 parent directories: No such file or directory
 shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access

 $ port info swig-ruby

 "pwd"

 "set current_portdir [pwd]"
