 although this setup as described is working well, I worried it was
 possibly too precarious to rely on itself like that in case of any
 unforeseen issues that might arise in future.

 I decided to install a new copy of macports into /opt/bootstrap, installed
 curl in that installation, and then referenced the curl in /opt/bootstrap
 when reinstalling macports back into /opt/local.
