 Not sure what was up with the checksum messages but I was finally able to
 resolve this by going to {prefix}/etc/macports/macports.conf

 And explicitly adding an rsync_server and rsync_dir directives. I have
 never had to do this in the past.

 rsync_server                   sea.us.rsync.macports.org
 rsync_dir                         release/tarballs/base.tar

 So that allowed me to download the tarbell and it is building now. Thanks
 for the attention to my problem. :)
