 To simplifiy this, we could use
 [https://developer.apple.com/reference/foundation/nsprocessinfo/1408730-operatingsystemversionstring?language=objc
 operatingSystemVersionString] (available on OS X >= 10.2). The only
 difference seems to be that this would also include the build number, but
 this is only the fallback anyway.
