 FWIW, my Terminal.app automatically uses a correct locale. My shell
 startup settings do not touch `LANG`.

 I don’t know why it would use just “UTF-8” for anything. Perhaps this
 happens when the system Language & Region settings are customized? I use
 the stock “United States” settings.
