 I don't know if anything ever came of the post to the mailing list
 mentioned above. The mailing list web server has not been running for
 awhile so I don't know if the mailing list still exists.

 Meanwhile, there is a [https://github.com/att/ast GitHub project for ast].
 Perhaps a bug report there would be useful, if indeed the version
 currently in the repo still suffers from the same problem (I did not
 check).
