 I copied cURL's `cacert.pem` to
 `/System/Library/OpenSSL/certs/cacert.pem`, which was previously empty. It
 did not resolve the issue.

 It looks like its the old/downlevel version of OpenSSL. OpenSSL 0.9.8
 lacks a lot of goodies, like elliptic curve support and TLS 1.2 support.
 It is certainly not following contemporary best practices.
