 At the same time, the Guide says:

 Always make sure to install the latest available version of Xcode for your
 macOS release.

 Does XCode 9.2 need to be explictly mentioned somewhere inside MacPorts as
 "supported"?

 Yes. browser:macports-ports/_resources/macports1.0/xcode_versions.ini
 needs to be updated.
