 The problem is that I couldn't reproduce the error, and as a result forgot
 about it waiting for feedback that would help me understand the problem.

 That has been the case now: see ticket #53438 . Audacity builds liblv2.a
 by adding the content of intermediate archives (static libraries) in a
 series of steps, and those files do not just include object files. That
 may or may not be an error in the `ar` command, but fortunately I
 remembered from long ago that this kind of archive construction doesn't
 always work on OS X - and how to get around that issue.

 I'd appreciate it if you could put the latest version of the attached
 patchfile in {{{`port dir audacity`/files}}} and try to build again (after
 `port clean`).
