 1. usually you fix this error on 10.5 PPC `ld: absolute address to symbol
 ___stdoutp in a different linkage unit` by adding -fPIC or similar to the
 configure line.

 2. building anything on 10.5 PPC with clang-3.4 is likely to lead to
 disaster
