 Hi all,

 Some additional information regarding the problem.

 The MacBook Pro running Sierra was a clean install of the OS with all the
 latest patches with the latest software:

 XQuartz 2.7.11
 XCode 8.2.1 **command line packages was installed as part of the MacPorts
 and xfig steps.
 Sierra Patches
 MacPorts 3.5.1 with xfig

 I do have another MacBook Air that was upgraded to Sierra from El Capitan
 with MacPorts and xfig working.

 ***  The MacPorts with xfig was installed in El Capitan before the Sierra
 upgrade.  ***
