 I just tried a clean build, from source, of wine-devel 2.0rc5 and got the
 same failed run results as before.  I did not uninstall everything first,
 as mf2k did.
 My guess is that the problem is that wine depends on another port and that
 port is not installed or being built correctly.  One possibility is that
 some required port is being installed just with the default variant, and
 instead +universal is required for wine.  If mf2k uninstalled everything
 and then installed, he might have ended up with different ports being
 +universal.  It seems that the install order of ports can change whether
 ports are installed default or +universal.  If some (or all?) ports are
 already installed, when a new port then depends on them, it seems that
 they are not (always?) upgraded to same variant.  So the clean build might
 change the variants of dependents.
