 It's supposed to be able to compile without ncurses installed --- that's
 why it checks during the configure step for rl_gnu_readline_p. If ncurses
 is not installed, then it shouldn't be compiling code that references that
 variable. I'd still like to see the output of the configure step.

 Regarding the failing tests, I'd need to see specifically which tests
 failed and the contents of test-suite.log are.

 A temporary ssh login to a machine to test on would be ideal.
