 I have a customer with roughly this same issue, except using an actual
 (clean) Mac OS X 10.8.5 install on a laptop. The actual error is:

 :info:configure checking for cpp... /usr/bin/cpp
 :info:configure checking if /usr/bin/cpp requires -undef... no
 :info:configure checking if /usr/bin/cpp requires -traditional...
 configure: error: /usr/bin/cpp does not preserve whitespace with or
 without -traditional.  I don't know what to do.
